Do you have a keen interest in Community Health Services? A great opportunity as a Community Health Services Assistant is available at the MRCC in the Maternal Health department to complete a Work Experience Opportunity placement (WE Opportunity) with qualified experienced industry staff in aspects of the Maternal Health. Students will experience a broad range of Maternal Health including, Infant Group, ew Parent Group, Sleep and Settle Program, Immunisation Clinic, Supported Playgroup during the week-long placement. MRCC is a dynamic organisation which emphasises the promotion of health, wellbeing and independence in Community Health.

Work Placement Location: MRCC Service Centre, 108 Madden Avenue Mildura.

Example of Placement Week:
Monday - MCH Universal Clinic.
Tuesday - New Parent Group.
Wednesday - Sleep and Settle Program.
Thursday - Immunisation Clinic.
Friday - Supported Playgroup.

The WE Opportunity is ideally suited to a Year 10 student or a VCE student. Share this opportunity with your Careers Transition Pathway Officer or Careers Coordinator.

Typical Tasks & Duties

The student will observe and spend time under the direct supervision of experienced and qualified staff with a focus on Community Health Services at the MRCC Maternal Health Department. The student will be part of a friendly professional and efficient team assisting Maternal Health staff in a broad range of industry programs delivered by MRCC in the Maternal Health Department.

The student may observe and assist with the following tasks and duties;
• Assist allied health professional
• Physical and social support to patient
• Administer clinical services and modalities
• Transfer patients
• Communication of patient progress/communication with other staff
• Assist with mobility and gait
• Provision of equipment
• Patient education
• Provision of health care to patients
• Supervise/conduct exercise classes
• Prepare patients for treatment
• Individual or group therapy
• Coordinate and assist in the operation of services
• Assist and coordinate health service
• Administration
• Stock ordering/requisition
• Prepare/maintain environment
• Equipment maintenance
• Health promotion
• Monitor and update health care-specific database
• Recording/statistics/database
• Housekeeping
• Cleaning

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards Community Health Services who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future WE placement to develop skills learned from their school subjects relating to Community Health Services.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the arts and culture, be sociable with good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Log Book to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

The student must be well presented, clean and hygienic
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed black work shoes.
• Confirm attire with SCHS representative- department requirements.
• Long hair must be tied back, nails must be kept short and clean.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
