Leith Park - Liscombe House
Situated in the heart of Diamond Valley, Leith Park provides a mix of independent living, low-level care, high-level care and dementia-specific care. Liscombe House is the on-site Aged Care facility, providing accommodation and specialised care for residents who are no longer able to live in an independent or assisted living environment. It includes a respite room, dementia-specific facility, Currie Wing (high-needs care) and Sensory Gardens. Also located on-site is a Community Hall for social gatherings and functions. Residents are encouraged to join interest groups including the Activities Committee which hosts a wide range of activities and outings.
Depending on day/s, your placement will be spent working alongside the Lifestyle Coordinator, Allied Health staff or other support staff. Activities may include social and group activities both on- and off-site, or observing or assisting with various therapy and movement sessions.
Skills You Might Learn
Aligned with VET Allied Health and Community Services studies, students may gain greater industry knowledge, investigating policies and procedures in an Aged Care environment, researching access to services, identifying and addressing specific client care needs, supporting meals and menus to meet recommended dietary guidelines or according to individualised plans, complying with infection prevention and control, complying with confidentiality protocols, etc. Vital interpersonal skills include communication, teamwork, time management, problem solving, demonstrating initiative, etc.
Typical Tasks & Duties
There will be a variety of activities and experiences during placement, depending on the schedule at the time. This could include music, arts and craft, movement, gardening, etc.
Placement students will also experience a range of “behind the scenes” activities, including admin tasks, maintaining a clean and tidy workspace, identifying potential hazards, etc.
** Students are encouraged to share their own personal interests and talents with staff and clients. For example, if you play a musical instrument, enjoy art/craft activities such as painting or knitting, perform magic tricks or tap dance, please let the staff know.**
Student Requirements
Best suited to VCE or VCAL students currently undertaking VET Allied Health, Community Services or related studies.
Students should demonstrate a genuine interest in this area, and pre-placement interview may be required.
Placement is subject to any relevant Covid-19 restrictions in place at the time, and students should follow all directions of staff relating to infection control.
Students are required to have all their vaccinations up to date (according to age and eligibility) prior to commencing placement.
Dress Requirements
Suitable for Aged Care environment. Closed toe shoes, neat casual (not dressy). Long hair tied back, discreet jewellery. No dangling necklaces or ear-rings that could be tempting for dementia patients to grab.
Special Transport Requirements
Venue is close to bus access.
Travel Form will be required to enable student to assist with off-site activities.
