Work Experience Opportunity Placement (WE Opportunity): Disability Support Worker Assistant at the Christie Centre Inc.
Work Placement Location: Christie Centre Head Office 115 - 117 Twelfth Street, Mildura.

Typical Tasks & Duties
As a Disability Support Worker Assistant at the Christie Centre Inc. Head Office, the student will observe and spend time under the direct supervision of experienced and qualified staff providing basic assistance and support to clients accessing a community service.
The student may observe and assist with the following tasks and duties;
• Participate in workplace health and safety.
• Communicate and work in health or community services.
• Apply basic principles and practices of infection control.
• Respond effectively to behaviours of concern.
• Assist with movement.
• Recognise healthy body systems.
• Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately.
• Engage with health professionals and the health care system.
• Transport individuals.
• Work with diverse people
• Work within a community development framework.
• Other tasks and duties relevant to the work placement as instructed.
Roles and Resposibilities.
- Be familiar with, support and promote Christie Centre Inc. Mission, Vision and Values.
- To promote a positive awareness of Christie Centre Inc. and its activities.
- To respect and maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality about Customers (Participants) and applicable Christie Centre Inc. business.
Student Requirements
Students with a positive attitude towards Disability Support Services who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future WE placement to develop skills learned from their school subjects relating to Community Services, Allied Health or Early Childhood Education and Care.
Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the Disability Support Services and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.
Essential: Good Communication Skills (Written and Verbal), friendly and approachable manner, pleasant disposition, ability to work as part of a team.
Desirable: Good organisational skills, basic knowledge of emotional, physical and behavioural needs of people with a disability.
Students prior to placement commencement will be required to;
- Complete an Induction Day and on-line Infection Control Module.
- Obtain Police Check if 18 yrs and over prior to commencing.
- The student will be expected to comply with COVID 19 Safe Plan.
Dress Requirements
The student will be required to present in the following work attire;
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed work shoes.
• Neat casual attire with no inappropriate slogans.
• Long hair must be tied back, nails must be kept short and clean.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.
Special Transport Requirements
Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
