Typical Tasks & Duties

As an Electrical Trades Assistant, the student will observe and assist qualified tradespeople with a range of electrical work in buildings and premises. They may assist with preparing materials, equipment and work areas and undertake appropriate trade related activities under direct supervision.

The Electrical Trades Assistant student may undertake the following tasks and duties:
Assist qualified electricians with the preparation of tools, equipment and materials and observe electrical installation, testing and checking activities.
- Apply Occupational Health and Safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace to work safely in the construction industry.
- Organise work equipment and job supplies each day for work.
- Follow job instructions, including verbal instructions.
- Use routine equipment, plant and technology appropriate to the work environment and permitted for use by a work experience student.
- Carry out appropriate routine work activities under supervision.
- Read and interpret routine information on job instructions.
- Apply environmentally sustainable procedures in the workplace.
- Identify and select components, accessories and materials used in electrical and energy-sector work activities.
- Observe or assist with the assembly of components where appropriate and under direct supervision.
- Fix and secure appropriate non-electrical equipment and materials under supervision.
- Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications as appropriate to the placement.
- Assist with the fabrication, assembly and dismantling of components as directed by a qualified tradesperson.
- Perform manual handling duties as instructed and in accordance with safe work practices.
- Assist with maintaining a clean and tidy work environment.
- Pack down work equipment and job supplies after work each day.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards Electricial who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future WE placement to develop skills learned from their School subjects relating to Electrotechnology.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in Electrical and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.

Student Responsibility to;
Carry a Victorian Construction Induction Card (White Card), please note: obtaining the White Card is required prior to attending the work placement.

Dress Requirements

The student will be required to present at work in the following work attire;
• Work pants or work shorts.
• Hi visual shirt, long sleeve.
• Steel capped work boots.
• Wide brim hat.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
