Housed within the Corporate Performance Directorate at Central Goldfields Shire Council, this People and Culture (Human Resources) placement provides students with an opportunity to take a look at the 'behind-the-scenes' workings within local government and provides an understanding of the responsibility of the unit.
Students will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff and gain an insight into the role and functions of the People and Culture unit including prioritising employee wellbeing, fostering a positive work environment and encouraging performance outcomes.
Skills You Might Learn
Students will gain an understanding of the role business services plays within the Council and may have the opportunity to attain a broad range of skills while on work placement including general employability skills such as:
• Communication
• Teamwork
• Punctuality
• Following instruction
• Working under supervision
The student may also attain vital industry specific skills which may include:
• Understanding the wide range of activities that the unit undertakes e.g., recruitment, administration, compensation and benefits, training and development, and employee relations and performance management
• Understanding of the important role and responsibilities of administration with HR
• Understand the industrial relations environment, and understand the legislative context (employment) in which Local Government operates
• Planning and organising
• Liaising and working with supervisors, colleagues and industry personnel
Typical Tasks & Duties
Students will have the opportunity to work with the team assisting with general administration duties while gaining an insight into the unit. Tasks and duties may include:
• Assisting with inquiries, requests and enhancing employee experience
• Assist with day-to-day activities (for example, workshops, unit visits, training activities) and ad hoc requests
• Participate in discussions to improve service delivery
• Completing all related placement tasks as assigned by Central Goldfields Shire Council trained staff.
Student Requirements
Students must be punctual, have a willingness to learn, take initiative and be aware that they will be representing the Council particularly when working in public spaces and attending business meetings.
Dress Requirements
Neat casual dress appropriate for the workplace with closed shoes e.g., no sport shoes, jeans or t-shirts.
Special Transport Requirements
Public transport is available.
