Work experience with a cabinet maker in the kitchen industry offers students insight into the design, fabrication, and installation of custom kitchen cabinetry. Students will observe skilled tradespeople using hand tools, power tools, and machinery to create high-quality joinery products while understanding client needs, materials, and workspace safety.

Typical Tasks & Duties
Assist with measuring, marking, and cutting materials
Sanding and preparing timber or boards
Assembling cabinetry and fittings under supervision
Organising tools and maintaining a tidy workspace
Assisting with delivery and on-site installation
Observing technical drawing interpretation and job planning
Participating in discussions with clients, designers, or suppliers (where appropriate)
Student Requirements
Interest in hands-on work and manual tasks
Good listening and communication skills
Ability to follow instructions carefully
Willingness to work safely and responsibly
Neat presentation and positive attitude
Parent/guardian consent and school permission
Completion of basic work safety training (see below)
Dress Requirements
Wear work boots (steel-cap preferred)
Long pants (workwear or jeans) and a plain t-shirt
High-visibility vest or shirt (if provided or required)
No loose jewellery or accessories
Long hair must be tied back
Bring safety glasses and hearing protection (or request from host)
Special Transport Requirements
Students must arrange their own transport
Ensure reliable arrival and pick-up each day
Confirm workplace address and parking/public transport options in advance
