A great opportunity is available at the Sunraysia Community Health Services (SCHS) as a Community Health Projects Assistant to complete a Structured Workplace Learning Placement (SWL Placement) in Community Service areas with qualified experienced Community Health Project Industry staff. The placement will be offered as a one-day placement under the five-day rotational placement program with Mallee Workforce Working Group.

Work placement Location: Corner of Deakin Avenue and 13th Street, Mildura.
The SWL Opportunity is ideally suited to a VCE-VM, VPC or VCE student studying VET Community Services as part of their study program at Second Year VET student or Year 12 level.
SCHS is a dynamic organisation which an emphasise on the promotion of health, wellbeing and independence in a social model of health.

Typical Tasks & Duties
As a Community Health Projects Assistant students will assist Health and Allied Health Project staff in a broad range of industry programs delivered by SCHS in Community Services. As a Community Health Projects Assistant, the student will observe and spend time shadowing under the direct supervision of experienced and qualified staff in the services provided at SCHS. The student will always work under direct supervision within the work environment.
Community Services reflects the role of entry level for community services workers who support individuals through the provision of person-centred services.
Community Services work may include day-to-day support of individuals in community settings or support of individual in community settings or support the implementation of specific community-based programs.
Community Services: The student may observe and assist with the following tasks and duties;
• Plan and apply time management.
• Provide first point of contact.
• Communicate and work in health or community services.
• Work with diverse people.
• Follow safe work practices for direct client care.
• Manage personal stresses in the work environment.
• Provide first aid.
• Promote Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander cultural safety.
• Respond to client needs.
• Work within a community development framework.
• Implement participation and engagement strategies.
• Use routine strategies for work-related learning.
Student Requirements
Students with a positive attitude towards the Community Health Projects Assistant who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET subject relating to Community Services.
Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the Community Health Services and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.
Prior to the interview with the host employer, students are required to review the businesses web page and learn some background information on the organisation and what it is they do.
Students will be requested to confirm pre placement requirements and onboarding information which will include vaccination history as instructed by the Host Employer. Vaccination requirements are mandatory with SCHS which will include an influenza vaccination. Students may be required to undertake an internal SCHS training course.
Dress Requirements
The student will be required to present in a neat and hygienic manner in the following work attire;
• Neat casual attire with full length work pants.
• Enclosed footwear, flat and non-slip.
• Long hair must be tied back, nails must be kept short and clean.
• Denim, leggings, torn clothing and inappropriate slogans are not acceptable, no clothing is to have language that may offend others.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.
Special Transport Requirements
Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
