If you are interested in a career in health services, a placement at Melbourne Speech and Language Services (MSLS) would be a great place to start! This opportunity is based at their Speech Pathology clinic in Dandenong, where you will shadow experience speech pathologists working with children at their clinic in Dandenong and in community settings. MSLS are an experienced team of caring professionals who assist children with their speech, language, and social skills development. (NO SCHOOL HOLIDAY PLACEMENTS)
Skills You Might Learn
This placement will provide an opportunity to build on the necessary skills to work effectively in the health care industry. Learning how to communicate effectively as part of a team of allied health professionals, assisting with planning sessions, note taking in a health setting, improving and developing resources for communication with clients. Work place skills of time management, working as part of a team, developing time management skills.
Typical Tasks & Duties
During your Speech Pathology placement you will be observing and helping out with individual speech therapy sessions of children from 3-7 years at our clinic in Dandenong. You will get to observe:
• therapy for students with delays in their language, articulation, social skills, play and literacy development
• visit community settings to observe children eg childcare, kindergartens or primary schools
• the planning pre- and post therapy including note taking, research and goal setting
• making of resources for children including pictures & stories that help with communication
Student Requirements
Students studying or interested in Speech Pathology, Psychiatry, Occupational Therapy or Nursing will be preferred for this placement. You will need to be self-motivated, enjoy literacy and numeracy, able to communicate with a range of participants (mostly children), work as part of a team and keep information confidential. Have a strong willingness to learn and follow instruction
