Rapid Houseboat Maintenance and Renovations

Students will gain hands-on experience in the marine industry by assisting with the maintenance, repair, and renovation of houseboats and jet skis. The placement provides exposure to mechanical, electrical, and general trade tasks in a unique working environment on and around the water.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Assisting with routine maintenance of houseboats and jet skis (e.g., cleaning, sanding, oiling).

Helping with engine checks, oil changes, and minor mechanical repairs under supervision.

Supporting painting, polishing, and surface restoration work.

Learning to use hand and power tools safely.

Assisting with inspections for safety compliance and functionality.

Helping prepare boats for client pickup, including cleaning and detailing.

Assisting tradespeople (mechanics, electricians, carpenters) in renovation projects.

Student Requirements

Must have parental/guardian consent if under 18.

Completion of Safe@Work or equivalent OHS module prior to commencement.

Ability to follow instructions carefully in a safety-sensitive environment.

Must be comfortable working around water and boats.

Vaccinations or medical clearance may be required for working in close contact with others.

Dress Requirements

Workwear appropriate for manual labour (hi-vis shirt or overalls, long pants).

Enclosed, non-slip work boots.

Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) for outdoor work.

Employer may provide safety gear such as gloves, life vests, eye/hearing protection.

Special Transport Requirements

Students are responsible for their own transport to and from the boatyard or marina.

Public transport may be limited—check schedules beforehand.

On-site parking may be available for students with a licence.
