The Work Experience Opportunity as a Hospital Assistant is ideally suited to a student in years 10 - 12 and runs for a week. The WE Opportunity is available commencing in 2026. During that time, you will experience a variety of different departments across the hospital.

Students will experience during the work experience a broad range of areas across:

- Stores
- Medical Workforce
- Allied Health and Community Programs

Typical Tasks & Duties

A work experience student will observe and may undertake the following tasks and duties under the direct supervision of qualified staff;
• Participate in workplace health and safety activities.
• Communicate and work appropriately in health and community service settings.
• Observe and participate in administration and reception procedures.
• Assist with general office tasks.
• Observe safe food handling practices.
• Support meal service activities under supervision.
• Observe, learn, and assist with the receival, tracking, and distribution of goods across MBPH.
• Assist with basic organisation tasks.
• Observe how staffing and rostering are managed.
• Observe patient care activities (with consent).
• Learn how hospitals connect with and support the community.
• Assist in the preparation and organisation of tasks that support patients.
• Other tasks and duties relevant to the work placement as instructed.

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude and interest towards the healthcare sector who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a work experience placement.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:

• Maintain confidentiality and privacy
• Students must be interested in the healthcare industry and providing exceptional care to our patients and the community
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.

Students will be requested to confirm work experience requirements and onboarding information which will include vaccination history as instructed by the Host Employer. Vaccination requirements are mandatory with MBPH. Students may be required to undertake an internal MBPH training course.

Dress Requirements

The student must be well presented, clean and hygienic at all times.
• Neat professional casual attire is required.
• Flat, non-slip, enclosed work shoes.
• Denim, leggings, torn clothing and inappropriate slogans are not acceptable.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
