Situated in North West Victoria, Mildura Rural City covers almost ten per cent of the State. The region’s landscape includes unique Mallee vegetation, broad acre grain properties, intensive horticultural farms and vibrant towns. The beautiful Murray River winds its way through much of the municipality and is a focal point for visitors and about 53,000 people who call the region home. Mildura Rural City acknowledges that it is situated on and incorporates the traditional lands of the Latji Latji and Barkindji people, who have been custodians of this land for thousands of years. A great opportunity as a Sustainability and Environment Officer Assistant is available at the Mildura Rural City Council to complete a Work Experience Opportunity placement (WE Opportunity).

Council works with a range of other local authorities and agencies to manage, enhance and protect our environment. The organisation is committed to best practice environmental policies, and is involved in many programs to enhance environmental outcomes in the region. Council also works to educate local residents about how they can live more sustainably.

Work Placement Location: MRCC, 108-116 Madden Avenue, Mildura.

The WE Opportunity is ideally suited to a Year 10 student or a VCE student.

Typical Tasks & Duties

The student as a Sustainability and Environment Officer Assistant will observe and may undertake duties as part of a professional team in the Sustainability and Environment area. A Sustainability and Environment Officer develops and implements strategies to help an organisation or community become more environmentally and socially responsible. Their work involves assessing environmental impacts, developing sustainability programs, ensuring compliance with legislation, and promoting sustainable practices to reduce waste and a carbon footprint. They also engage with stakeholders, prepare grant applications and reports, and conduct research on new technologies and best practices. The student will work under direct supervision of experienced and qualified staff.

The student may support and assist with the following tasks and duties;
- Contribution to health and safety of self and others
- Deliver customer service
- Work effectively in a sustainability and environment work environment
- Process and maintain information
- Communicate verbally and electronically
- Produce and alter simple documents
- Participate in sustainable work practices
- Follow instructions in an emergency situation
- Maintain industry specific knowledge

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards Sustainability and Environment Industry (Clean Energy) who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future WE placement to develop skills learned from their school subjects relating to Sustainability and Environment Industry (Clean Energy).

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the Sustainability and Environment Officer Assistant opportunity and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

The student must be well presented, clean and hygienic at all times.
- Neat casual business attire.
- Non-slip enclosed shoes

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
