This opportunity introduces students to the intake and assessment functions that connect individuals and families with appropriate community supports. Students will assist with administrative processes, resource preparation, and program or event support, while shadowing staff involved in intake, referral pathways, and community engagement. The placement highlights how accurate information, coordination, and professional communication underpin effective service delivery across the community sector.
Skills You Might Learn
A student completing these tasks would gain a blend of practical office skills and confidence in preparing program spaces and community events. They would learn how to communicate with staff and participants, draft simple resources, and follow workplace expectations with professionalism. Regular shadowing and weekly reflections would help them understand client work, observe effective practice, and recognise their own growth. Exposure to partner services and outreach tasks would broaden their understanding of how agencies connect and how administrative work supports the wider service system.
Typical Tasks & Duties
Tasks relevant to the student’s modules/course.
Administrative and office tasks: Filing documents, scanning forms, and maintaining basic logs.
Program and activity support: Group activity preparation; Setting up rooms, preparing materials, arranging refreshments, and assisting with attendance sheets.
Event support: Helping with community workshops, information days, groups, or outreach activities; Completing Risk Assessments
Resource development: Drafting simple handouts, posters, or checklists that staff will review and finalise.
Workplace learning and professional conduct: Shadowing staff; Following mentors to understand roles in casework, outreach, or intake and assessment.
Reflective practice: Completing weekly reflections, noting what was learned, what skills improved, and any questions that arose; Case noting with support
Workplace protocols: Learning confidentiality rules, safe work procedures, client rights, communication standards, and cultural awareness expectations.
Practical support tasks: Helping with outreach/information packs
Observation of external services: Where suitable, visiting partner agencies to understand referral pathways and the broader service network.
Student Requirements
Students must be able to work respectfully in an office-based environment where sensitive information is handled. Strong attention to detail, clear communication, and a willingness to learn about confidentiality and information-sharing protocols are required. Students should be comfortable with routine tasks such as filing and data handling and show interest in understanding how services assess needs and link people to supports. Reliability, professionalism, and reflective practice are expected.
Students are to submit a resume, application letter and attend an interview at Uniting Vic Tas prior to placement being confirmed.

This placement is in Horsham. Students are to make their own travel arrangements to attend the placement. Public transport information is available from PTV at https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/
This placement includes site-based work. Students will be required to complete the SWL travel and accommodation form.
