Steel Chicks is proud to partner with SELLEN to introduce young women in South East Melbourne to career opportunities in steel construction and manufacturing industries.
This structured work experience program supports female students in years 10, 11, and 12 to explore real career pathways across steel trades, manufacturing, and STEM-related roles. Through
office- and site-based workplace learning, they learn from professionals—tradespeople, engineers, project managers—and gain hands-on exposure to non-traditional careers in steel.

Skills You Might Learn

Typical Tasks & Duties

• Complete a one-week structured workplace placement within the steel and construction industry.
• Observe and assist with daily operations in office, workshop, or site environments.
• Support tradespeople, engineers, project coordinators, and industry professionals.
• Participate in supervised hands-on activities relevant to their placement area.
• Attend site visits and workplace learning sessions.
• Engage in mentoring discussions and career exploration activities.
• Follow all workplace health and safety procedures.

Student Requirements

• Female students in Years 10, 11, or 12.
• Interest in trades, manufacturing, construction, engineering, or STEM-related pathways.
• Willingness to learn and try new tasks.
• Strong commitment to completing the full placement week
• Reliable, punctual, and respectful behaviour in professional environments
• Ability to follow safety instructions at all times

Dress Requirements

Safety-rated boots and hi-vis work shirt required.

Special Transport Requirements

• Students are responsible for arranging their own transport to and from the host workplace.
• Some placements may require travel to industrial or construction sites.
