Mildura Disability Support Services have an exciting Work Experience Opportunity (WE Opportunity) as a Disability Support Worker. The WE Opportunity is ideally suited to a Year 10 student or a VCE student.
Work placement Location: 1/4-6 Midway Drive, Buronga NSW

During the observation‑only placement, the student develops a foundational understanding of disability support and the community services sector. While not performing direct tasks, the student gains the following skills and knowledge:
Understanding of Disability Support Work
• Awareness of the role of Disability Support Workers, person‑centred practice, participant rights, and the importance of choice and control.
Communication & Professional Conduct
• Insight into respectful, trauma‑informed, and culturally safe communication.
• Understanding professional boundaries, privacy, and confidentiality requirements.
Work Health & Safety Awareness
• Observation of hazard identification, safe environments, infection control, hygiene practices, and emergency procedures.
Ethical & Safe Practice Knowledge
• Understanding dignity of risk, consent, safeguarding obligations, and why restrictive practices require authorised use.
Observation of Support Delivery
• Insight into daily living routines, goal‑based activities, community access, and capacity‑building supports.
Documentation Awareness
• Understanding how staff complete progress notes, risk assessments, and reporting, including why accurate, objective documentation is essential.
Teamwork & Collaboration
• Awareness of multidisciplinary roles and how staff coordinate supports and escalate concerns.
Reflective Learning & Workplace Expectations
• Development of basic reflective practice through learning logs and supervised discussions.
• Understanding punctuality, presentation, workplace etiquette, and compliance with organisational policies.
Typical Tasks & Duties
The Work Experience Student completes a structured observation-only placement to gain insight into the role of Disability Support Workers and the supports provided to participants. Throughout the placement, the student will shadow experienced staff, observe safe and person‑centred practice, and reflect on what they learn. The student must not provide support, give advice, handle participant information independently, or take part in any direct tasks
• Observe Disability Support Workers in both community and centre-based environments.
• Attend shift briefings and debriefs under supervision, without participating in decision‑making.
• View how staff document supports, risks, and progress (without writing, editing, or storing records).
• Observe interactions with multidisciplinary teams such as coordinators and therapists when approved by the supervisor.
• Complete supervised reflection notes, toolbox talks, and learning activities assigned by the supervisor.
• Undertake non-client-facing induction or eLearning modules suitable for observers.
• Follow all supervisor instructions, site rules, PPE requirements, sign‑in/out processes, and privacy obligations
• Supports such as community access, daily living routines, goal-based activities, and structured programs.
• Safe practice including infection control, hygiene, food safety, and environmental checks.
• WHS processes such as hazard identification, incident prevention, safe environments, and emergency procedures.
• Professional conduct including respectful communication, cultural safety, trauma‑informed approaches, active listening, and supporting participant choice and control.
• Supervisor‑led discussions using non‑confidential, de‑identified examples.
• Completion of learning tools such as daily reflections and end‑of‑placement summaries.
• All activities remain strictly observational and fully supervised.
Student Requirements
Must be studying, enrolled in, or demonstrating a strong interest in Community Services, Disability, Youth Work, Aged Care, Allied Health, or related human services. Must show a genuine interest in disability support, person‑centred practice, and inclusive community values. Must demonstrate willingness to learn through observation only, not direct support.

• Reliable and punctual; able to commit to the scheduled placement hours.
Pre‑Placement Documentation
• Signed Confidentiality Agreement (observer version).
• Signed Code of Conduct acknowledgment.
• Completed Work Experience Agreement between school and host organisation.
• Parent/guardian signature if the student is under 18.
• Background Checks (as required by the organisation)
• Valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) – if the service supports children or if organisational policy requires it.
Dress Requirements
• Neat, clean, and appropriate attire in line with organisational policy.
• Enclosed footwear and any required PPE supplied by the organisation.
• No inappropriate logos, messaging, or unsafe accessories.
Special Transport Requirements
Student to arrange own transport to and from work. Head Office is located across the river in Buronga.
