Cummins and Noonan have a Structured Workplace Learning Opportunity (SWL Opportunity) as a Electrical Trades Assistant.

The business is mobile and services both residential, commercial and industrial customers. Some of the areas you may gain exposure to are Construction and maintenance of plant operations including mining & processing industries, construction and maintenance of commercial and industrial properties including factories, wineries, pumps, shops and offices, wiring of new and existing residential buildings, telephone and data cabling, solar power systems, marine and air conditioning and refrigeration

The SWL Opportunity is ideally suited to a VCE-VM, VPC or VCE student studying VET Electrotechnology as part of their study program.

Typical Tasks & Duties

As an Electrical Trades Assistant you will assist with the select, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain of a wide range electrical systems and equipment in building and premises.

The Electrical Trades Assistant student may undertake the following tasks and duties.
• Assist Qualified Electricians and participate in electrical work activities including
electrical installation of refrigeration and air conditioning units, required tests and checks.
• Apply Occupational Health and Safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace to work safely in the construction industry.
• Organise work equipment and job supplies each day for work.
• Follow job instructions, including verbal instruction.
• Solve problems in dc circuits.
• Use of routine equipment/plant/technologies in an energy sector environment.
• Carry out routine work activities in an energy sector environment.
• Read and interpret routine information on job instructions.
• Apply environmentally and sustainable procedures in the energy sector.
• Identify and select components, accessories and materials for energy sector work activities.
• Assemble electronic components.
• Fix and secure electrotechnology equipment.
• Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications.
• Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utilities industry components.
• Perform manual handling duties as instructed.
• Assist with maintaining a clean and tidy work environment.
• Pack down of work equipment and job supplies after work each day.

Student Requirements

Students should demonstrate a good work ethic, willingness to learn with an ability to follow instructions and to problem solve in the electrical field are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET subject in Electrotechnology.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Log Book to the work placement every day.

Student Responsibility to;
Carry a Victorian Construction Induction Card (White Card), please note: obtaining the White Card is required prior to attending the work placement.

Dress Requirements

The student will be required to present in the following work attire;
• Work pants.
• Electrical work shirt, hi visual.
• Work boots, steel cap.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
