Typical Tasks & Duties

As an Engineering Trades Assistant the student will be assisting tradespeople with all aspects of the operation under the direct supervision of qualified staff.

Task and duties that the student may complete under supervision include but are not limited to.
Apply occupational health and safety principles in an engineering environment
Safely use hand tools and hand held power tools for general engineering applications
Learn how to plan and undertake routine tasks
Apply quality systems and procedures
Work with others in a manufacturing and engineering environment.
Collecting materials for jobs
Interpret and prepare basic two and three dimensional engineering drawings
Perform basic machining processes
Apply basic fabrication techniques
Undertake a basic engineering project
Perform intermediate engineering computations
Perform basic welding and thermal cutting processes
Observe a job from start to finish and document the processes involved
Create an inventory of tools used, detailing which employee positions use each.
Stock take the materials used in the business
Cleaning work spaces

Student Requirements

Students with a positive attitude towards Engineering Industry who are self-motivated, willing to listen and follow instruction are encouraged to consider a future SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET subject relating to Engineering.

Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
• Students must be interested in the Engineering Industry and possess good communication skills.
• Students must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
• Dress appropriately.
• Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
• Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
• Be punctual.
• Follow management instructions.
• Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
• Work within the team.
• Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
• Respect other people’s belongings.
• Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
• Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
• Take their Logbook to the work placement every day.

Dress Requirements

The student will be required to present at work in the following work attire;
• Full length work pants.
• Hi visual long shirt - engineering trade.
• Steel capped work boots.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the tasks and duties carried out by the student, will be supplied by the Host Employer.

Special Transport Requirements

Public Transport is limited, students to check bus transport availability and or speak to parents/carer to organise transport prior to contacting employer.
