Buloke Electrical has a one week SWL placement opportunity available for a student who is motivated and enthusiastic about the electrical trade profession. Owner/Operator, Dave has many years of experience and a long history of supporting student work placement. Dave and his team are supportive and students will be given worthwhile experiences in the various aspects of residential, commercial and industrial electrical maintenance and services. Skills You Might Learn
Students will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the very basic principles of electricity and of the use of specific tools and procedures relevant to electricity supply and uses. Students will learn how to interact with work colleagues as they will be out on work sites with a qualified electrician during their working day.
Skills attained will include the following;
- Importance of teamwork.
- Time management and punctuality.
- Communication skills in the workplace.
- Experience and familiarity with general electrical and maintenance functions.
- Exposure to electrical fit outs and maintenance activities in a professional environment.
- Broader understanding of what an electrician role involves on a day-to-day basis.
- Excellent customer service skills.
Typical Tasks & Duties
Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification.
Students may assist or observe trained staff with the following activities:
- Tidying workshop areas and observing basic electrical procedures while under supervision.
- Work as a productive team member and follow instructions from qualified employees to assist them in their roles.
- Assist qualified employees with laying cables, trenching and helping with tools and equipment.
Student Requirements
Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET course in Construction and/or Electrotechnology.
The following requirements must be met;
- The students must have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) module in the relevant VET course, along with a completed White Card (Construction Induction Card).
- Work will be physical and students must remain at ground level and take no risks when power equipment and/or machines are in operation.
- Students must not use plant or equipment that pose an unacceptable risk to their health or safety, or which require extensive training or experience to use safely.
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Students must be willing to communicate clearly and work with a team. This includes notifying the workplace supervisor and the careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence.
- Students must be completing a related subject or have displayed an interest in the area of Electrical services.
- Students are to complete any applicable relevant course work and/or Workplace Learning Record entries as outlined in the SWL Arrangement.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.
Dress Requirements
Please discuss all dress requirements with the employer at the pre placement interview. Students will need to wear long pants and a long sleeved shirt, and protective work boots. Wet weather gear will be needed in wetter months. A hat and sunscreen are essential for working outdoors. Appropriate PPE must be worn in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety policy and procedure.
Special Transport Requirements
The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
