Locally owned and operated, Fred and Bet’s Café endeavour to provide customers with a dining experience they do not wish to forget. All food and drinks can be eat in or takeaway – convenient online ordering through the SKIP app is available. Fred and Bet’s offer catering for functions big or small, supporting businesses in hosting events.
This placement is a great chance for students with passion for customer service to learn about the roles of a chef, hospitality manager, front of house attendant, barista and waitstaff. It particularly suits someone with an interest in customer service while learning food handling skills. Students will gain experience in many aspects of the day to day operations of a busy cafe and catering business. Typical Tasks & Duties

Students will assist staff carrying out their duties and complete tasks assigned by the workplace supervisor. This placement directly involves customer service in the various sections of the cafe and in the catering business. Students will learn about stock replenishment and displays, assisting customers, food handling and assisting with food service to takeaway customers and table service.
Students will be responsible for the following tasks;
- Assisting trained staff with related food service activities as instructed.
- Engaging with customers as advised by Fred and Bet’s Cafe staff.
- Completing all kitchen hand related cleaning, set up and packing away tasks as assigned by Fred and Bet’s Cafe staff.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their Industry and Enterprise subject and/or VET course in Hospitality.
The following requirements must be met;
- Students may undertake tasks and typical duties only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.
- Students must have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) module in Work Related Skills or the OH&S module in the relevant VET course.
- Student must be interested in the Hospitality industry.
- Student must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
- Dress appropriately.
- Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
- Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner.
- Be punctual and contact both the workplace supervisor and the careers teacher if there are any planned or unplanned absences.
- Follow management instructions.
- Have good communication skills. This includes notifying the workplace supervisor and the careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absences.
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements.
- Work within the team.
- Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
- Respect other people’s belongings.
- Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
- Take their Workplace Learning Record or have practical assessments prepared to complete at the work placement every day.
- Comply with instructions around the use of personal mobile phones and understand that all personal devices are only to be used on breaks or out of work hours.

Dress Requirements

Students are required to wear enclosed, non slip shoes. Appropriate attire for a food and beverage attendant will be discussed with the successful student applicant.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
