Typical Tasks & Duties
Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification. Students will be responsible for the following tasks;
- Assisting trained staff with civil construction and gardening management tasks as instructed.
- Engaging in manual labour.
- Completing all set up and packing away and cleaning tasks as assigned by trained staff.
This position will include duties such as helping the Manager and other employees to assist them in their roles. Student will be expected to be an active participant in all workplace practices. The business has a diverse team of professionals, and this gives the student an excellent chance to be hands on a lot of the time in a variety of job roles.
Student Requirements
Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET course in Civil Construction and/or Business Services. The following requirements must be met;
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements and have completed OH&S modules as part of their VET course. This includes obtaining a Construction Induction training (White Card).
- Be punctual and notify the workplace supervisor and careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence from placement. Please discuss extension of placement dates if there are nominal hours to be completed as part of the VET course.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course or school subject.
- Take their Workplace Learning Record and/or take course assessment tasks to the work placement every day.
- Personal mobile phones are not required during work hours. Mobile phones or devices are only to be used during meal breaks and out of work hours.
- Students are required to have a keen interest in occupations related to Civil Construction and/or Business Services.
- Students must be able to spend extended periods observing and gaining knowledge of processes and procedures before taking part in tasks and duties.
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Students must be willing to communicate clearly and work with a team.
Dress Requirements
Students undertaking a placement will be required to wear long sleeved shirts and work pants and boots as appropriate for specific roles in the profession. All Personal Protective Equipment will be discussed with the student before workplace learning commences and must be worn according to company policy and procedure.
Special Transport Requirements
The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. This opportunity does require the student to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
