Gateway Local Learning Employment Network (LLEN) has partnered with Surveying Task Force to offer unique Structured Workplace Learning and Work Experience placements within the Surveying industry.
Our mission is to inspire and enable students to pursue a fulfilling career in surveying. We offer a unique Work Experience Program that provides students with a direct link to surveying organisations who are looking to support and mentor you.
Simply contact Gateway LLEN with your placement request to receive the application form for this opportunity. From there the Surveying Task Force will identify a local surveying firm eager to host you and find you a placement. Once we have your placement confirmed we will introduce you to the surveying firm via email where you can discuss the details of your placement and confirm a meeting time and location for your first day.
Skills You Might Learn
Students will gain many skills from this opportunity, such as:
- Customer service and communication
- Time management
- Learn what a Certificate of Title is
- Gain experience in GPS and Permanent Survey Marks
- Introduction to CAD program and how to draw a basic plan
- Setting up a total station and introduction to common survey equipment
- Learn how to complete a Title Boundary Survey
- Setting up survey targets
- Computations such as plotting a plan of Subdivision
Typical Tasks & Duties
Students will have the opportunity to observe and assist our land surveyors in the field, gaining a comprehensive understanding of land surveying. They will learn how to use survey equipment and adhere to all safety requirements. The placement will also include practical experience in the office. Students can expect to assist surveyors on various projects, including feature and level surveys, re-establishing title, and small construction projects.
Student Requirements
Requirements for the placement will vary dependent upon the surveying firm.
Students are not required to be studying a related VET Certificate.
Please note that it is beneficial for students to acquire a White Card for placements, but not essential.

Dress Requirements
Closed-toed shoes are essential. Additional uniform requirements will be discussed with employer.
Special Transport Requirements
Transport options will vary depending on location of surveying firm/site. The student or parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student's transport to and from the workplace.
