Salvos Stores is the retail arm of The Salvation Army Australia Southern Territory and operates over 200 retail stores nationally. Salvos Stores operates as a fully functioning retail business, recycling pre-loved goods donated by the public.
An opportunity exists for students undertaking a Certificate in Retail Operations to obtain first-hand experience of a busy retail environment.
Skills You Might Learn
Interpersonal skills, product knowledge, product placement, stocktaking, pricing and excellent customer service. Also point of sale procedures. Work and life skills, for example, time management, communication and personal development skills. Students will also learn about teamwork while working alongside a team of full-time staff and volunteers.
Typical Tasks & Duties
This placement will offer students the chance to attain a broad range of retail skills, including sorting donated clothing and bric-a-brac, serving customers, stock preparation, pricing and tagging, assist and support staff to replenish stock as required. Students will also need to undertake some housekeeping duties.
Student Requirements
Students must show initiative and be keen to work each day. Students will get the most out of this placement if they have the ability to interact with a range of different customers. While working in a retail environment students should be respectful, courteous and professional. Students must be punctual and notify their supervisor if they cannot attend or are running late. No phones are permitted while working on the shop floor.
Dress Requirements
Black neat casual clothing and closed toed shoes.
Special Transport Requirements
Accessible via public transport. Bus stops are situated at various locations in Dandenong within walking distance.
