Ararat Gallery TAMA (Textile Art Museum Australia) is a unique cultural institution with a nationally significant collection focused on textile and fibre art. Located within the historic Ararat Town Hall, the gallery provides a vibrant space for contemporary exhibitions, public programs, and educational workshops. This placement offers students a behind-the-scenes look at the daily operations of a regional public gallery. Working as a Gallery Assistant, students will support the small, professional team in maintaining a welcoming environment for visitors and assisting with the logistical tasks that keep the gallery running smoothly.

Typical Tasks & Duties
Students will be responsible for the following tasks;
- Visitor Services: Act as a welcoming point of contact for gallery visitors, providing basic information about current exhibitions and the gallery's history.
- Exhibition Support: Assist with the physical preparation of gallery spaces, which may include cleaning display cases, replenishing brochures, or helping with basic exhibition setup and pack-down.
- Public Programs: Provide logistical support for public events, workshops, and children’s activities, including setting up equipment and clearing away materials.
- Collection Care: Assist staff with basic administrative tasks related to the collection, such as filing or helping with the digitisation of collection records.
- Retail Assistance: Support the gallery shop by ensuring displays are tidy and assisting with stock counts or basic inventory tasks.
Student Requirements
The following requirements must be met;
- Interests: A genuine interest in the visual arts, textiles, or museum and heritage studies.
- Professionalism: Punctuality, a neat appearance, and a respectful manner when dealing with members of the public.
- Communication: Strong verbal communication skills and a willingness to engage with visitors of all ages.
- Attributes: A self-motivated "can-do" attitude and a willingness to undertake both creative and routine administrative or manual tasks.
Dress Requirements
Students undertaking a placement will be required to wear neat casual clothing as appropriate for an office space.
Special Transport Requirements
The student will be required to arrange their own transport; if transport is presenting a problem please contact CGLLEN to discuss available options and support that can be provided.
