This Structured Workplace Learning placement provides students with the opportunity to gain practical industry experience in diesel mechanics within a railway heritage workshop environment. Students will observe and assist with the inspection, maintenance, servicing, and restoration of heritage diesel locomotives and associated equipment under supervision. The placement aims to develop workplace skills, an understanding of diesel mechanical systems, safe work practices, and knowledge of career pathways in the automotive, heavy vehicle, and rail industries.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students will gain a vast variety of exposure to the rail industry industry. Your tasks and duties may include, but will not be limited too:
1. Observe and assist with the inspection and maintenance of heritage diesel locomotives.
2. Assist with cleaning locomotives, components, and workshop areas.
3. Support workshop housekeeping and organisation of tools and materials.
4. Observe servicing, fault-finding, and repair procedures under supervision.
5. Assist with basic maintenance tasks as directed by the supervisor.
6. Participate in workplace safety activities and follow safe work practices.
7. Learn about diesel mechanical systems, railway operations, and maintenance procedures.
8. Assist with preparation of equipment and components for maintenance and restoration work.
9. Complete tasks in a safe, responsible, and professional manner.

Student Requirements

Students should have a keen interest in the rail industry and a willingness to learn. Students will be required to email the CRLLEN to express an interest in a placement (placements@centralrangesllen.org.au). Emails should include a covering letter & resume, requested dates for placement, type of placement and identify any relevant VET courses the student is undertaking.

Dress Requirements

Wear appropriate work clothing, including long pants, long-sleeved hi-vis shirt, and steel-capped safety boots.

Special Transport Requirements

Student must arrange their own transport. Site is accessible via V/Line services to Seymour Railway Station.
