This Workplace Experience placement is suitable for students interested in diesel mechanics, automotive trades, engineering, heavy vehicles, or railway operations. The placement provides an opportunity for students to explore the workplace, observe industry practices, and develop employability skills in a supervised workshop environment. Teachers should ensure students are aware of workplace expectations, safety requirements, attendance obligations, and appropriate conduct prior to commencement. Students must wear suitable work clothing and PPE as specified by the host organisation. Contact with the workplace supervisor during the placement is encouraged to support student learning and wellbeing.

Typical Tasks & Duties

- Observe diesel mechanics and volunteers performing maintenance and restoration work on heritage locomotives.
- Assist with cleaning locomotives, components, and workshop facilities.
- Help organise tools, parts, and materials within the workshop.
- Assist with basic workshop housekeeping and maintaining a safe work environment.
- Observe inspections, servicing procedures, and mechanical repairs.
- Assist with preparing equipment and components for maintenance activities.
- Learn about diesel engines, railway systems, and workshop operations.
- Participate in workplace safety briefings and follow safe work practices.
- Support general workshop activities as directed by the supervisor.

Note: Duties are observational and support-based in nature and will be performed under supervision in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements. Tasks may vary depending on operational requirements and the student's experience level.

Student Requirements

Students should have a keen interest in the rail industry and a willingness to learn. Students will be required to email the CRLLEN to express an interest in a placement (placements@centralrangesllen.org.au). Emails should include a covering letter & resume, requested dates for placement.

Dress Requirements

Wear appropriate work clothing, including long pants, long-sleeved hi-vis shirt, and steel-capped safety boots.

Special Transport Requirements

Student must arrange their own transport. Site is accessible via V/Line services to Seymour Railway Station.
