In this placement students will have the opportunity to work in the Stawell Regional Library which offers an extensive range of services. The library experience will allow students to gain practical skills around the various areas of library operation whether it be in organising resources or working with various library user groups. The Northern Grampians Shire Council is a large regional centre north-west of Melbourne in the heart of Victoria. Strategically located at an important junction of several major highways, the city is a logical stopping off point for tourists exploring the nearby Grampians Ranges and Pyrenees wine regions. The region is renowned for tourism, the production of world-class wines, agriculture and manufacturing, which collectively fire a buoyant regional economy. At Northern Grampians Shire Council students will be able to complete SWL placements that engage them in a wide variety of industry areas. Stawell Library is located on Sloane St, Stawell. Skills You Might Learn

Students will work with staff to attain the following skills;

- Business skill development including stock control and booking systems.
- Effective customer service and community relations.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Duties that students may undertake are assisting with story time activities, creating flyers to promote special library events, cataloguing library items and collections and assisting customers. Helping process new items for the Library's collection is another possible duty during this placement.
Students will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Assisting trained staff with related office administration and cataloguing tasks as instructed by trained staff.
- Engaging with customers as advised by trained staff.
- Completing all cleaning and set up and pack away tasks as assigned by trained staff.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET course in Community Services, Business and/or Information Technology. Whilst the student is attending the work placement they are expected to:
- Student must be willing to spend periods of time observing and to undertake necessary tasks as requested.
- Dress appropriately and wear Personal Protective Equipment as part of certain work tasks and duties.
- Maintain interest and participate in tasks and work duties.
- Be well mannered and behave in a respectful and responsible manner towards work colleagues, customers, and delivery personnel.
- Be punctual and notify the workplace supervisor and careers teacher of any planned or unplanned absence from placement.
- Follow management instructions carefully and competently.
- Have good communication skills and display a friendly customer service manner.
- Act in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements and have completed OHS modules as part of their course or school subject.
- Work as a productive team member and have skills in effective communication.
- Listen and take advice from fellow workers.
- Respect other people’s belongings.
- Keep a note pad and pen handy to take notes for their own reference.
- Demonstrate the skills they have developed through their course.
- Take their Workplace Learning Record and/or course skills assessment tasks to the work placement every day.
- Personal mobile phones are not required and should only be used out of work hours or on meal breaks.

Dress Requirements

Students undertaking a placement with Northern Grampians Shire Council will be required to wear neat casual clothing as appropriate for an office space.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
