Students may only undertake structured workplace learning at Thomas Foods International if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification. Skills You Might Learn

Students will gain a wide range of skills throughout their placement. These include but are not limited to the following:
- Learn how to apply safe and effective hygiene and sanitisation practices.
- Develop the ability to follow safe work practices and procedures.
- Learn how to follow safe manual handling procedures and techniques.
- Develop good communication skills in the workplace.
- Gain an overview of meat processing industry and its day to day operations.
- Perform basic labouring and warehousing duties.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students may undertake tasks and typical duties only if they are completing a relevant Agriculture and/or Animal Handling qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.
Students may assist or observe trained staff with the following activities:
- Students whilst completing placement, will be supervised and get to experience and have a greater understanding of a meat processing plant.
- Students must work as part of a team and have a willingness to learn how to perform tasks that are essential for success and safety of work performance.
There maybe an opportunity for ongoing casual work for successful placement students.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their VET subject in Agriculture and/or Animal Studies.
The following requirements must be met;
- Students must have completed the OH&S module in the relevant VET course.
- Students are permitted to learn how to use plant or equipment only if they are explicitly required in the performance criteria or assessment requirements of a unit of competency the student is undertaking as part of a VET qualification.
- Students must have a curious and enthusiastic attitude to work.
- Students need to be able to enjoy manual labour work and be comfortable working with animals and strictly follow abattoir processes and procedures. It is a requirement that all staff be immunised against Q fever prior to commencing placement with the company.
- A QFever test and vaccination, if required, will be arranged by the company at no cost to the student.
- Students may undertake structured workplace learning at Frew Foods International only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.

Dress Requirements

The company provides boots and clothing which are laundered onsite each day. A locker is provided in the change room to store your clothes and belongings in whilst onsite. All personal protective equipment will be supplied by the company as required.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
