Gledfield is a family owned and operated agribusiness and is situated in Willaura. You will be working alongside the owners of the property, with opportunities to learn aspects of livestock handling and animal husbandry in sheep and wool production. The successful student will also have the chance to network with farming professionals and experience pasture management and broad acre cropping. This exciting opportunity will be available for a set time frame and due to the seasonality of the farm work, student attendance will need to be negotiated with the host employer. Skills You Might Learn

The student will gain an understanding of working as a Farm Hand. Students can expect to learn basic skills in farming techniques such as growing pasture and livestock, machinery operations and farm maintenance. Students will learn about the importance of communication, working safely in a farm environment and being a productive team member.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students may undertake specific tasks and duties as part of their structured workplace learning only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and are required to undergo specific assessments outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification. Where students are not completing a relevant VET qualification, they may only undertake structured workplace learning tasks and duties as mentioned in the Department’s guidelines for work experience with animals. Students could be involved in basic domestic staff duties, assisting with feeding livestock, care for health and welfare of livestock, moving and drafting livestock and other general farm tasks such as mechanical and machinery operations and farm maintenance.

Student Requirements

Students are encouraged to consider a SWL placement to develop skills learned from their subject Industry and Enterprise and/or their VET course in Agriculture. The following requirements must be met;
- Students may undertake tasks and typical duties only if they are completing a relevant VET qualification and the structured workplace learning will allow them to obtain or further develop the skills and knowledge outlined in a relevant unit of competency within the qualification.
- Students must have completed the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) module in Work Related Skills or the OH&S module in the relevant VET course, along with a completed White Card (Construction Induction Card).
- Students must have a willingness to learn and be able to follow instructions carefully and competently.
- Punctuality is important and any planned or unplanned absences must be reported to both the workplace supervisor and the careers teacher.
- Students should only undertake this SWL placement if they are motivated and willing to actively participate in tasks and duties that will enhance their employability skills.
- Students are to complete any applicable relevant course work and/or Workplace Learning Record entries as outlined in the SWL Arrangement.
- Students must enjoy outdoor practical work and be comfortable working with machinery and animals.
- Students must display a reliable nature and be willing to develop the capabilities of a Farm Hand.
- Students must be accountable for their own actions.
- Students must be respectful of their peers and workmates.
- Students must ensure safe work practices and look out for other team member's safety. Use of personal mobile phones are only permitted during meal breaks and in instances under instruction by work supervisors.

Dress Requirements

Students will need to wear long pants and shirts, and protective work boots. Wet weather gear will be needed in wetter months. A hat and sunscreen are essential for working outdoors. Appropriate PPE must be worn in accordance with WHS policy and procedure.

Special Transport Requirements

The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) is responsible for the student’s transport to and from the workplace. If it is proposed that the student may need to undertake vehicle travel with their employer and/or supervisor during the arrangement (including transporting the student to and/or from the workplace), the employer must complete the Structured Workplace Learning Travel and Accommodation Form. The student or the parent/guardian (where the student is under 18 years of age) must give their consent by also completing this form.
