This is a modern and well equipped diesel engine repair workshop and spare parts outlet with a long history of offering 2-week block placements to enthusiastic students keen to pursue a career in heavy vehicle industry. It is a busy workplace where students will gain skills and experience on the workshop floor. Students successfully completing their placement may be offered an apprenticeship and long-term employment once they complete their apprenticeship. Female students are encouraged to apply for these placements.

Skills You Might Learn

- Students will gain an understanding of mechanical processes particularly in relation to heavy vehicles
- An introduction to the heavy vehicle industry
- Understanding of the basics of an automotive workshop
- Working with colleagues to ensure high standards of service are delivered
- Understanding of OH & S requirements in a heavy vehicle industry.
- Learning about customer service requirements in the context of a workshop and service centre.
- Students will learn a range of basic mechanical repair techniques under close supervision. They will also be expected to be an active participant in all workplace practices.

Typical Tasks & Duties

This position will include duties assisting staff who are involved with diesel parts and engine repairs. Duties will be directed by the Truck Bay Supervisor and may include;
- General maintenance of trucks
- Basic diagnostics of electrical and mechanical systems
- Provide Inspection Reports
- As well as assisting with basic mechanical tasks, students will be expected to carry out general workshop tidying and maintenance of workshop equipment and hand tools.

Student Requirements

- An interest in learning about mechanics in a heavy industry environment
- Ability to follow instructions and maintain safe practice at all times
- A curious nature and ability to ask questions to ensure understanding
- The student must have completed the OH&S module in WRS VCAL or else have begun the OH&S module in the relevant VET course.

Dress Requirements

Students will wear neat casual clothing suited to the workplace plus work boots.
